Glossary of Terms
Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)
A reduction in vision in one eye compared to the other even with glasses or contacts.
Astigmatism
A vision problem that occurs when light entering the eye is unable to be brought into a single, clear focus, resulting in blurry vision. Astigmatism can occur with nearsightedness or farsightedness.
Convergence
The coordinated movement and focus of our two eyes inward on close objects.
Convergence Insufficiency
When the eyes do not come together closely enough when looking at a near object so the eyes are essentially looking “past” the target focal point. This is a common problem.
Diplopia
Double vision. This can result when our eyes do not aim in the same place, either at distance or up close.
Dyslexia
According to the International Dyslexia Association, dyslexia is: “a language-based learning disability [and] refers to a cluster of symptoms that result in people having difficulties with specific language skills, particularly reading.” Dyslexia is not a vision problem, but a substantial number of individuals with dyslexia have other vision problems.
Farsightedness (Hyperopia)
The inability to see close objects easily and clearly.
Nearsightedness (Myopia)
The inability to see objects at a distance.
Strabismus (Crossed Eye/Eye Turn)
